Digitization and the shortage of skilled workers have increased the demand for no-code and low-code development models. Both approaches aim at shorter development cycles. IT service provider Fellow Consulting AG shows what low-code platforms should offer in concrete terms.
There are major differences between no-code and low-code platforms. The no-code approach describes the possibility of adapting applications completely without scripting or programming effort using graphical editors. As a rule, more complex requirements cannot be implemented in this way, and data exchange with third-party systems, especially when integrating the business logic, is only supported to a very limited extent or not at all. As a result, no-code usage is best suited for relatively simple use cases.
With low-code tools, on the other hand, not only simple but also complex technical and specialist tasks can be completed with little programming or scripting effort. They also support the implementation of complex organizational and procedural requirements or the interaction and data exchange with third-party systems in the company. While IT-savvy departments can already create solutions with no-code, low-code approaches require the involvement of IT experts, although they do not necessarily have to be programmers.
Low-code platforms offer both graphical editors and scripting languages
Fellow Consulting has been involved in digital transformation for years and was one of the first companies to focus on low-code development with the Polydocs was completed in just four months – including design, development, testing and launch of the application. “With a traditional approach, this would have been a much longer and more expensive project,” says Dillinger.
The success factor for a successful digital transformation is not only the right strategy, but also agile methods and tools that specialize in a rapid prototyping Polydocs platform. “With Polydocs WF², we can quickly develop high-quality applications that meet all requirements – from a simple website to software that meets all requirements for data security and compliance,” says Thomas Dillinger, CEO of Fellow Consulting AG. Low-Code development enables processes to be mapped quickly, flexibly and cost-effectively – without sacrificing quality.
The project was implemented with Polydocs WF² in just four months – from design to go-live. “With a traditional approach, this would have been a much longer and more expensive project,” says Dillinger.
The result was not only an agile implementation process, but also a high degree of flexibility: The software can be quickly adapted to changing requirements, for example when new products are added.
However, the current situation is far from satisfactory: In a recent survey, only every second company that has already started using no-code or low-code platforms was able to achieve its project goals to a satisfactory extent. One of the main reasons for this is that the use of these tools is often not well thought out and planned from the start.
